Kitty Church of Christ of Georgetown, Guyana
by Jerry Cantrell

15 April 2000

I wanted to share some exciting news with you about the Kitty Church which meets in Georgetown, Guyana. This congregation was started about three years ago by a couple of church families living in that area. Shortly thereafter, Frederick Darrell, a graduate of Guyana International Bible Institute, started preaching for and working with the congregation. They were just a small handful of people in those early days.

The following summer a WBS campaign sent some workers to the area. They were successful in reaching additional people with the gospel, but the church was too small to adequately follow up after the campaigners were gone. So several of those who obeyed the gospel were lost because of the lack of necessary teaching.

This past summer a doctor and nurse from Rome, Georgia, a dentist and technician from Milton, Florida, and a group of Bible teachers from Cocoa, Florida, combined efforts to conduct a mini medical mission. Several hundred people were treated, but more importantly 28 people were immersed into Christ. Most of these people are still faithful today because the church is larger and better prepared to cope with the follow up.

On Friday evening when the meeting closed, the last convert was a lady by the name of Lorna Monic. Immediately following her conversion she shared her new found faith with her husband. He was obedient. Since their conversion this couple has been responsible for over 20 people being led to the Lord. In addition Lorna has brought many children to the congregation.

Due to the combined efforts of all the Kitty members, the church (shown above) now numbers over 100. For some time they have been meeting over the Kitty Market, but recently received news that the Market was being sold and that they would have to move. They had been saving their money in case something like this happened. They have been able to accumulate about $500,000 Guyanese, or just less than $3,000.00 US.

The unique thing about this church is that they have been doing most of this on their own. They receive no outside support from anyone. Frederick Darrell supports himself with a small store in his house. The church is wanting to hire a full time preacher and they plan to do this themselves. They are to be commended for the progress they have made and continue to make.

I want to share a note with you I received from Guyana.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The bids for the sale of Kitty Market where the Kitty Church is, were opened on the 14 April 2000. They are now under consideration by the municipality.

This means that our need to relocate is most URGENT. Could you please let us know the extent of your benevolence, if any, as soon as possible? We must act now. Could you communicate the URGENCY of our situation to everyone who wishes to help?

God bless you.

Frederick

proposed site

This move from the Market has caught them by surprise and their immediate needs have changed as a result. They have a possible property picked out (shown above) and would like to purchase it. The price is $7 Million Guyanese dollars. That is approximately $39,500.00 US dollars. They are seeking some American churches or individuals who might be willing to help them.
