GOOD THINGS HAPPENING IN GUYANA
by Jerry Cantrell
25 April 1997

A lot of good things are taking place in Guyana. Events are unfolding that will open even more doors for the cause of Christ in this Carribean nation. The church has a full time doctor, Mark Landis and his wife Rose, working in the Northwest District at Mabaruma. They run the government hospital there and Mark preaches at least twice every Sunday and sometimes three times as well as holding classes in the Amerindian villages. They have already had 9 baptisms in less than two months. In July Mark and Rose will be joined by his parents who are seasoned missionaries. They are working together with one our graduates from the School of Biblical Studies, HM Lachmeneraine. This is not HM's home either, so he is doing mission work even though he is Guyanese.

I have also been corresponding with three families who are making plans to move here in the summer to work with the Children's Praise Hospital in Georgetown. Both of these hospitals are being sponsored by African Christian Hospitals Foundation out of Searcy, AR. Since the greatest population of people is in Georgetown, this means a greater number of people will be influenced by the Praise Hospital. And to think, it will be operated by our brethren. To God be the glory!

The School of Biblical Studies has begun the spring recruiting for the fall class. It looks as if we will have a good number of prospective students to apply. Those who are supporting this effort, we ask your continued support. Preachers are needed to fill the many pulpits that are being created by medical missions and numerous other campaigns. The demand for preachers is far exceeding the supply. We cannot train these men without your help. It is a great challenge we have, to keep up with the rapid spread of the Gospel here in Guyana.

This summer our students will be assisting the medical teams who will be here, and the other campaigns. A certain number of students will be assigned to each campaign group to especially do follow-up work when the campaigners are gone. We feel this will help prevent the lose of many who could fall through the cracks.

Pouderyon Church Celebration

Sunday, April 20th the Pouderyon church celebrated its 6th year of existence. Brother Gerald DeMendonca is the local minister. Several other congregations joined their services with Pouderyon to share in the celebration. About 150 people were present. The congregation's normal attendance is about 40. Cecil Price, the youth minister for the Parkview church in Sherman, Texas, who sponsors Gerald, was present to represent the church.

Following services, in which Gerald challenged the church to improve on the past six years in the coming future, refreshments were served to everyone present. The young church has a lot of enthusaism.

Next Sunday, May 4th we will be joining the Enmore church for their 10th Anniversary.
