13 February 1999 Thank You is one of those phrases we can't seem to use often enough when it
comes to all of you and your assistance with the work in Guyana. We
appreciate you so much! You are responsible for everything being accomplished
by us and the Guyana International Bible Institute (GIBI).
You are helping to provide a living subsistence for 13 students and their
families. You are helping to assist with travel expenses for four local men
who are teaching at GIBI. You provide mine and Mary Alice's salary, and for
that we are very grateful!
What you do each month with your contributions is making a tremendous
difference in the Guyana work. And from the bottom of our hearts we Thank
You!
The Webb Chapel Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas, will again be hosting the
"Guyana Forum" for 1999. The dates for this year's Forum is March 26-28.
Webb Chapel was the gracious host for this Forum last year, and a great many
good things were accomplished. There are many "key" players in the Guyana
work who are accomplishing a lot of good things there. Those accomplishments
need to be shared with the group as a whole. We are urging all the people we
know to please consider sending at least one representative to the Forum in
Dallas. God has really blessed this work and now it is time for us to pull
together so these blessings can be maximized. If possible, it is time to
coordinate our efforts to see
them multiplied. It is time we are all on the "same page" with the work. The
Forum will not provide answers for all our individual situations, but it can
certainly help.
From a personal point of view I would like to know how GIBI can better serve
you, the Guyanese, and the church in Guyana. By all of us being together the
answer to that question can be learned.
David Lusk will provide you with any needed information. Contact him by email
at: davidlusk@webbchapel.org, or call: 972-241-3293.
I hope you will allow me to share a couple of personal highlights from the
Cantrell's life.
I feel like I have been in school all my life. When I was in the Air Force I
was
constantly going to school. Then I decided to attend the Sunset School of
Preaching in 1967. From there I have attended colleges in Georgia, Illinois
and Florida. To make a long story shorter, in November '98 I received my
D.Min. from the Theological University of America. If it is okay to be
proud, then I am of having a Doctorate in Ministry.
After six very precious grandchildren, our daughter Kristy, and youngest of
four children, will be presenting us with number seven in April. We are
rushing down to Guyana to complete a quick tour so Mac can be back, and
present, with our daughter when number seven arrives. Please keep us all in
your prayers!

PARTNERS IN PROGRESS
Steve DeLoach with "Partners In Progress" says he has eight medical teams
coming to Guyana this summer. In addition he has planned a "Youth Camp" for
prospective missionaries. The eight medical teams will be working with
churches along the East Coast, in Georgetown, and the West Bank. Between 300
and 500 people are added to the Kingdom each summer as the result of the work
of these teams. Christians participating
are from several churches across America. There will also be some "nurturing"
projects planned to help strengthen the many young converts. These teams do an
excellent work.
INDEPENDENT CAMPAIGNS
Many churches are planning 1999 campaigns to Guyana. Most of these churches
work independently of each other but in complete unity with a view toward
reaching the lost.
March 2-14 Charles Box and the Greenville, Alabama, church will be working in
the Plaisance area.
March 18-25 Harold Kelly from Huntsville, AL, will be leading a group to
Industry along the East Coast.
March 29-April 14 Jack Tomlinson and Boyd Williams will bring crusaders from
Melbourne and Vero Beach, Florida, to work with the Melanie church, which is
also out along the East Coast of Guyana.
GIBI STUDENT CAMPAIGNS
In addition to the numerous American led Campaigns each year, GIBI
students conduct 2 to 3 local campaigns themselves.
February 15-19 they will be in the Eccles area. This community is just
outside of Georgetown. As far as is known no church exists in this area but a
lot people live there. Parmanan Kissoon will be preaching the first night,
followed by three of our 2nd year students, and closed on Friday by Nigel Mileo
from Linden. Student campaigns have had good results.
A special thanks to Buddy and Carolyn Farr of New Smyrna Beach, FL, for helping
us purchase a much needed office copier. Our's recently went down and was not
repairable. Thank you so much!
Ray Ballard of Keller, Texas, donated a VHS video camera for us to use in our
"Homiletics" classes. This is going to be a real asset for our students being
able to critique themselves in their preaching styles.
I will be hand carrying both items to Guyana when we go down on February
20th. Thank you!

Dear Webmaster:
Congratulations! Your web site, http://www.guyana-missions.org/links.htm, has
been chosen by America Online's International Channel for their [travel/South
America] forum.
We think you'll notice dramatically increased usage because of this exposure.
America Online is the premier online service of the United States, drawing
millions of its members to the web every day.
Please contact us if you have any questions about our link to your site. You
can find it on AOL by going to keyword [Intl, Guyana, etc.] or by pressing the
control key and K (on the Mac, apple key + K) simultaneously, and then typing
[Guyana].
We'll see you in cyberspace!
Sincerely, A BETTER AUTOMOBILE
GIBI has a 1986 Toyota Carina sedan. This automobile has been used by the
school for several years. It is made available to all those who come and
teach. It is just about worn out and is in bad need of being replaced. For
the past two years we have been raising money for this purpose. We have
approximately $23,000 in our "Auto Fund." You would think we had plenty of
money, but we don't. The vehicle we need is a 1993-95 Toyota 4 Runner. This
particular automobile sells
for approximately $19,000 in Guyana. In September '98 the Guyanese government
changed how duty is paid on incoming vehicles. You pay according to the CC's
of the engine, and you pay the duty whether you buy the vehicle in the country
or bring it into the country. The duty on this vehicle is $17,000. All of
these figures are in US currency. Our vehicle is going to cost us $36,000.
We are still $14,000 short of what is needed.
We have petitioned the government for a "duty-free" concession, but we are
not anticipating receiving it since they have turned us down on other items
when we petitioned them.
VIDEOS FOR SATELLITE SCHOOLS
In January '99 GIBI plans to launch its satellite school program. The goal
of this program is to try and reach the average member that composes the local
congregations. GIBI has been doing a good job teaching and training those
committed to preaching the gospel, but we have not been doing as good a job in
teaching the church.
We believe the future of a strong church in Guyana will be the result of
teaching as many people as we can. Presently we have only 55 preachers who
are trying to minister to 80 churches. The task of these preachers is almost
an impossible one. GIBI can help them by assisting in the maturing process of
their members. We will do this by establishing satellite schools in strategic
locations where members from several congregations will be able to attend.
The schools will be conducted in the evenings providing opportunity for the
maximum number of participants. The schools will follow the same format as
the full time school in Georgetown. The schools will be both video and
lecture. To do this we need to purchase a complete set of study videos at a
cost $2000. Hopefully some of you can help with this purchase. If you can
assist with this need, or any of the others that are mentioned above, please
send your contribution to:
We are very happy to welcome Doug and Dawn Winder, along with their two
children, Doug Jr. and Danielle, to the work in Guyana. They originally came as
part of a team to work with a church sponsored walk-in clinic. The clinic has
not yet materialized so they are focusing in another much needed area of
"nurturing." They have been working with several churches but concentrated
primarily with the church at Campbellville in Georgetown. We believe they
will be an asset to the Guyana work.
Andy and Alison Boosinger and their children also came as a part of that team.
They are both LPNs. They are now focusing on "nurturing" and help the
Guyanese people by conducting "health classes."
Guyana is short on American workers so we welcome these dedicated families
and wish them Godspeed as they labor for the Lord in this South American
country. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
