Why do we do the work in Guyana?

Have you ever wondered that?
Have you ever wondered why we have been doing what we have been doing in Guyana for so long?
(This year will start our 17th year here!)

There are a lot of reasons ...

  1. Because Guyana is so receptive to the Gospel. We have had well over 5,000 baptisms in the past 15 years and hundreds more answer the call of Jesus every single year.

  2. Because so many people are touched by our work. Over 222,000 people have been treated in our Clinics, and each one of them have had the opportunity to hear the message of the cross!
    • But they are not the only ones who are touched. Our volunteers that come down and join us each year, come home changed. Those that come to work with us come home with a new perspective ... and often end up doing GREAT things at home as well.
    • Furthermore, the churches that send those teams end up being blessed in amazing ways! They start new ministries, reach out to their communities, and do many GREAT THINGS!
    • When God's people answer His call ... He always blesses them.

  3. Because the Church in Guyana is growing in so many ways. We are seeing the church in Guyana grow in virtually every way. They are growing in number, in faith, and in maturity! It is truly thrilling to watch this. When I first came to Guyana in 1989, there were a dozen Churches of Christ meeting in Guyana ... today, there are over 100!

  4. Because we have such an outstanding Network in Guyana to work with. One of the reasons for this is simply because we have been doing this for so long. Through the years we have developed outstanding relationships with the Church in Guyana, with Business Leaders, and with Government Leaders of Guyana. This places the church in a position that is truly unique throughout the country.

  5. Because we feel that God has called us to this work. Through the years, with the blessings and success we have enjoyed in this work, it has become abundantly clear that this is our calling. All this time, we have felt certain that we are doing exactly what God wants us to do ... and that drives us to do even more.
    • I highly recommend this for everyone. Find what God is calling you to do, and then do it with all your might.

  6. Because there has been no indication that it is time to stop. God keeps opening doors. The church continues to grow and mature. And we are watching real, sustainable growth take place on almost every front. Seeing the church mature before your very eyes is a great way to be motivated.

There are probably more reasons than those listed above, but the truth of the matter is ... God keeps blessing our efforts! The efforts of everyone involved seems to be blessed in amazing ways, and there has been no sign that is changing.

Are you looking for a reason to join us? There are lots of them.

Come on! Be a part of this great work! Let God use you! You will be amazed at what happens.

Your co-worker in the Faith,
Steve DeLoach

The last few years have seen a lot of changes in the work in Guyana. God has presented us with so many new opportunities and given us the resources to deal with those changes.

This video details some of that work and some of the changes planned for the future. Just to review some of the challenges God has laid before us and our plans:

  1. The flood of 2004-2005 which presented us a tremendous opportunity for service to the Guyanese population in the distribution of food and cleaning supplies.
  2. Our new school has taken off significantly. We have had approximately 350 students go through the school in the first two years.
  3. This past year, we welcomed one new medical mission team in January. Next year, we will have two. These new teams do not take away from the existing groups coming during the summer.
  4. We are setting up an advisory council to help us plan and implement this growth. We expect to be announcing details of this group soon.
