In May of this year (1998), we met a little boy who had a very sad past. Born
in Guyana in January 1997, Isaiah’s mother and father were not married. In fact,
the father was married to someone else, and Isaiah’s mother was the
father’s "mistress."

In August 1997, Isaiah’s mother became ill, and she died in September
1997. At that point, the father couldn’t take him....so Isaiah stayed
with his Grandmother and Aunt. However, they did not have the means to
take care of him.
In November 1997, 10-month-old Isaiah was checked into the Georgetown Hospital,
suffering from severe malnutrition. He only weighed 7 pounds.
Isaiah stayed in the hospital until April 1998. During his hospital
stay, none of his family came to visit him. For all practical purposes,
he was all alone in the world.
When he left the hospital, he was placed in the
Guyana Red Cross Children's Convalescent Home. At the time of his check-in, he was 15
months old and weighed about 12 pounds. He could not walk or talk, and
could only crawl a couple of feet. He had chronic respiratory problems,
was still suffering the effects of malnutrition, and no one seemed to
care for him at all.
It was at this time that we met Isaiah, and our entire family fell in
love with him. We began to try to work something out to adopt him. Of
course, we didn’t have a clue of how to go about this.

The process was long, and time consuming. We met many roadblocks and
obstacles, but finally....on September 8th, 1998....we got custody of Isaiah
and were able to take him home with us! Shortly after that, on
September 12th, we journeyed back to the States with our little boy in
tow. It was a time of incredible happiness and joy for everyone. Since
arriving home, Isaiah has steadily gained weight, has learned to walk,
has begun to thrive, and is generally doing very well.
However, one month after arriving back in the states, we found out
that Isaiah is infected with the HIV virus. Needless to say, we were
shaken by this news. It did, however, explain his mother's sudden death,
and Isaiah’s failure to thrive.
Since his diagnosis, we have been in touch with Arkansas Children’s
Hospital, and have made several trips there to get Isaiah into
treatment. He is not covered on our insurance, but thus far, the
Hospital is treating him and we are looking at social programs that he
may qualify for. Please pray for this.
When he was diagnosed, his Viral Load (the amount of virus in his
system) was VERY high. In fact, it was 750,000! His immune system was
working at about 50% (which we were surprised to find out...we expected
it to be much lower). After ONE month of treatments on the HIV triple
drug therapy, his viral load dropped to 675! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!!
Even the Hospital was shocked at such a dramatic decrease.
Please keep Isaiah and our family in your daily prayers. We are
convinced that is why we have seen such dramatic improvement! Pray that
God will heal him, that the drugs will continue to work, and that God
will use Isaiah for His service.
Remember!!! Prayer Changes Things!!!

Update: January 12, 1999
Isaiah was seen by his doctor at Arkansas Children's Hospital on January 12, 1999. No blood tests were done. His chest x-ray shows an area that appears to be lymphoid interstitial pneumonitis, a type of recurrent pneumonia which is very common for patients with his underlying immune deficiency. Overall, he is doing well at present. His doses of medicines were increased to keep up with his weight gain. He is scheduled to return to Children's Hospital in April when more lab tests are planned. |

Update: 9:26 p.m., April 27, 1999
We have just received an email from the Arkansas Children's Hospital telling us FANTASTIC news!!!
On Isaiah's last blood test (taken two weeks ago today), his "Viral Load" (the amount of HIV found in his Blood) was at 0.....THAT'S RIGHT..... ZERO!!!!! UNDETECTABLE!!!!!
Although this does not mean he is cured, it does mean that we are on the right track and with every month we "buy" him at this level, we could add years to his life later.
Please join us by stopping right now and thanking God for this wonderful news!!! Keep us in your prayers as well!!!
THANK YOU GOD!!!!!
Yours in Christ, |

Update: May 26, 1999
Word was just received that Isaiah has lost his Arkansas Medicaid coverage!
We do not understand why this has happened.
This is especially worrisome since three of the medications he takes are very expensive.
Without these drugs, he is at serious risk of losing his life.
He is currently taking
Bactrim, Norvir Oral Solution (made by Abbott), Retrovir Syrup (made by Glaxo Wellcome), and Epivir Oral Solution (by Glaxo Wellcome).
Click here to find out what is being done and learn how you can help.
And, please keep praying for little Isaiah.

Update: September 4, 1999
Well, things have really been hectic here the past few days. We are leaving the country in the next week to head back to the States and begin the preparation for 2000. Already we have 9 different projects for next summer, and that really has us excited.
I met again yesterday with our Guyanese attorney and here is the way this looks like it is going to play out over the next few months.
First, we are putting the finishing touches on getting our paperwork turned in to the Adoption Board and other entities. This should be done within the next week and that will take us to the next step.
The Adoption board is waiting on a Home Study from the U.S., and then they will do a home visit here in Guyana at our house. Once the U.S. Home Study and the Guyana Home Study is completed, then we can proceed to the Court.
Our Attorney will take the case before a judge in October, and then ... hopefully we will have an adoption hearing in November in the judge's chambers. The court date in October will not require our presence, but the November date will at least require my presence. (Usually I come down in January to get things in order for the year. I will just have to push it forward a couple of months.)
Hopefully, the November hearing will finalize the adoption from the Guyana point of view, and we will be well on our way to getting everything finished Stateside. After almost 18 months, it will finally be done.
Please pray that this works out and that God's rich blessing shines on us.
Please keep us in your prayers. I mean on a daily basis. The prayers of the saints are often the only thing that sustains us.
God bless you all!
Your Brother and Friend,

Update: January 18, 2000
Dear Friends,
Since we have arrived back in the States, Isaiah has been to Children's Hospital a couple of times. Each time he has gone, we have gotten good news. He is still at an HIV "undetectable" status, and his immune system seems to be at 100% of what a child his age and size should be. He is still responding very well to the Medication, and there have been no ill effects from taking the Medicine.
He is just doing GREAT! And a lot of the reason for his situation now ... is that YOU have been praying for him. THANK YOU!!!
On January 8th, Isaiah celebrated his 3rd Birthday! Needless to say, we feel so blessed to be able to share this time with him. Without a doubt, had he not come our way, he would have never seen his third birthday. We thank God for the blessing he has brought into our lives ... and pray that continues.
Right now, I am in Guyana, preparing for the Medical Missions we will have this coming summer. Please pray that all goes well, and that our plans are well laid for the coming year.
As was noted in our last entry, the adoption process is "winding down." Last week, I met with members of the Adoption Board and they have given their approval to the adoption. This means that the only step we still have to take is to stand before the Chief Justice and for her to give the final Adoption Decree. It is our prayer that this can happen within the next week.
Please pray about this. Pray that the paperwork will go through the proper channels without being held up, and pray that the final decree will be given and that we will be able to resolve the adoption issue quickly.
As I said earlier, I fully believe that we are at the place we are in Isaiah's life because you have been praying for us on a regular basis. Please take one of Isaiah's pictures from this page ... print it ... and put it somewhere you will see it every day. When you look at that picture, stop and say a prayer on Isaiah's behalf.
I am certain that, with your prayers and support, his situation will continue to improve and be blessed.
Thank you for your love and support.
Your Brother in Christ,
Update: January 20, 2000 Dear Friends, Today, I heard from our attorney here in Guyana, Miss Dela Britton. She called to inform me that she is working to set up a court date with the Judge for next Tuesday, January 25th. If all goes well, this court date will finalize the adoption of Isaiah!
Please pray for several things.
It probably wouldn't hurt to pray for our sanity either. This entire process has been full of lots of ups and downs. We sure are excited though that it appears to be about to wrap up. Thank you so much for your interest, your prayers, your support, and your encouragement through this process.
We love you all,
P.S. Send this to anyone you know and ask them to pray, too. Let's put this in God's hands and watch Him work. Update: January 22, 2000 Dear Friends and Loved ones, Well, I found out late yesterday afternoon that this Tuesday is the day for our Court Hearing concerning Isaiah's adoption. This should be the final step here in Guyana. I am meeting with the Attorney on Tuesday at 8:45am and then walking down to the Judge's Chambers. We are second on the schedule, so all of this should be over by 10am (8:00am Central Time). Please pray that all goes well, and that Isaiah's adoption finally goes as we hope. Thank you so much for your love and support through this entire situation. Without the things you have done to encourage us and "hold up our arms," we could not have made it. Please pray fervently and we will let you know how things work out.
Your Brother in Christ,
Update: January 25, 2000 Dear Friends and Loved Ones, I just came from the High Court. The process didn't take a long time. Our attorney and the representative from the Adoption Board were there. The Judge asked several questions and then, after some tense moments, granted the Adoption Order. Now, after over 18 months of trying ... Isaiah is our little boy. We still do not have all the paperwork in regards to this, but our attorney seems to think that everything will be in order within the next 3 days. Thank you so much for all your prayers and support. I know your prayers made a difference. Of course, this is now the "half way" point. We have to do this all over again in the USA in order for his adoption to be recognized there. But this was the most important part of the process. Without the adoption order from here, everything else would have stopped. Again, keep us in your prayers that God will continue to bless Isaiah's health, and our family. WE LOVE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.
Yours,

Update: May 5, 2000
We did get good news on Isaiah's last check up. He is still testing HIV negative. Not cured, but he is responding to medication wonderfully. Isaiah's check up was on April 18th, but it took 2 weeks to hear back from the test. Also, at his check up they said he had only gained a few ounces since January, so they wanted him to try to put on more weight this summer. We're working on it!!!!!!! ~~Colleen DeLoach |

Update: June 25, 2000
It has been a while since we have reported anything on Isaiah, because he is doing so well. Since coming to Guyana the first of May, he has really thrived. He plays outside almost every day, and his appetite seems to have increased dramatically. He LOVES rice, and that is a dish that is served alot here ... so he is very happy. As a result, he is putting on some weight and growing in every way. Because of his weight gain, his medication dosage has been raised, too. He is still responding well to the medication and is not suffering from any discernable side effects. As was mentioned in earlier reports, he is still at a "zero detected" HIV status, and has been since April 1999. We are so happy with this status and pray that this will continue. Please keep Isaiah in your prayers. We still have the adoption process in the U.S.A. to finish, and then we have his Immigration status as well. Recently, we passed another "milestone" here in Guyana by getting his name officially changed to Isaiah Adam DeLoach. This was not done during the adoption process and had to be done with a separate legal process. Of course, since we have had him, we have called him "Isaiah," and he doesn't know he ever had any other name. Keep us in your prayers, too, as our journey with our son continues. We know God has other chapters in his life that are waiting out there. Pray that as each chapter is opened to us, that we will be able to trust in God through it, and let God continue to use us and guide us.
Until later,
Meagan, Isaiah, and Erin DeLoach |

Update: January 9, 2001
When he was checked three weeks ago, his CD4 count had dropped enough that he had to start back on his antibiotic three times a week. Since the CD4 had dropped, there was concern that his HIV level had gone up. So for a long three weeks, we were anxiously awaiting the results of the HIV level. But, as it turned out, when he was checked, he was in the beginning stages of some kind of infection. He began to run fever a couple of days after his check up and had a bad sore throat. So, probably the CD4 count was low because of that infection. But, until he is re-checked, he'll continue on the antibiotic. We are so thankful to have the medications that he needs. We are enjoying Isaiah so much. He is such a joy and blessing. We are so thankful that God chose him for our family.
To God be the glory, See pictures of his 4th birthday. |

Update: October 12, 2001
PLEASE PRAY for Isaiah and for us. Pray that Isaiah will be placed on the best medicine possible which will help him attain the best outcome. Pray for our patience and our trust in the Lord. Pray that God will bless Isaiah to grow into a man who will be a servant of Jesus Christ.
Love, Update: October 19, 2001
The past couple weeks have really been a hectic time for us and Isaiah. About two weeks ago, we got word that his HIV status had gone from undetectable to Positive. To say that we were upset would have been a major understatement.
After a lot of prayer and going back to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock for another test ... we got word today that his HIV status is back to Negative!
PRAISE GOD!!! Thank you for your prayers!
I believe that the disease was just giving us a "bump" to remind us it is there and to keep us from taking for granted that he is now "okay." Currently, our plans are to go to Arkansas Children's Hospital the middle of November and decide where we go from here. After another blood test, I suppose what they will decide is if we should change his meds or continue as we are.
What we are asking of you now is to PLEASE put Isaiah on your regular and daily prayer list ... and keep him there. Let's not get complacent. If God's people are praying for him, then GREAT THINGS WILL CONTINUE to happen.
You can get the full story, in terms of what has been happening, by returning to the top of this Web page.
Keep us in your Prayers!
Yours in Christ,

We got good results from Isaiah's latest blood tests in November. The meds he's been taking for the past 2 1/2 years are working well, so the doctors have decided to leave him on those. Thank you for every prayer prayed for Isaiah. He is a great blessing! Colleen

Update: April 16, 2002
We have recently encountered a "road block" that had us on our knees. Isaiah's medical needs have been financially covered by Children's Medical Services. They recently informed us that their funds were very low and they had to drop Isaiah's coverage. We immediately began seeking help, through the Lord, with friends and church family. We were given some funds to help purchase meds for immediate use and also given advice of which avenues to seek help from different organizations. So, at the present time we've had some good leads. We have some paper work to fill out and return that looks to be a hopeful situation. As always, we seek your prayers and ask that you also give praise to God for His provision.
May each of you receive God's blessings.

We had our interview at the embassy this morning. Isaiah has been granted his
immigrant visa. Upon arrival back in the U.S. in September, when they stamp his
passport in Miami, he will automatically be a U.S. citizen. That also means his
adoption is final. Great news and big relief. We are so thankful to God for
this precious boy and for getting all this finalized.
Today is Isaiah's sixth birthday! We have so much to be thankful for. He is such a blessing to us and he is doing well health-wise. About three weeks ago, he went to Little Rock to Arkansas Children's Hospital for his regular check-up and blood tests. It normally takes two weeks to get all the results back. But because of the holidays, it was taking longer than usual. We were getting really anxious. But God just had us wait so it would make his birthday an even more joyous occasion. We heard from the nurse on his birthday... He is still HIV undetectable!!
Because of the slow rise in his cholesterol, Isaiah's infectious disease doctors consulted a cardiologist. They came to the conclusion that his anti-viral medications are doing him so much good that they would suggest not taking him off of those. Steve and I whole-heartedly agreed. His cholesterol is something we'll keep a check on and ask you to pray about.
Thank you for the time you have already spent in prayer on Isaiah's behalf. Thank you for touching our lives.
Dear Friends and Loved Ones,
We have gotten some FANTASTIC news the past couple of days regarding Isaiah.
Yesterday, Colleen and I went to Fort Smith for an appointment with I.N.S. We thought we needed to get a Citizenship Certificate as a final step in the process for him. HOWEVER, when we got there and they looked at all his paperwork, they informed us that we would not need to do that ... that his final requirements had been fulfilled.
We also talked to the people at Vital Records here in Arkansas, and they are going to issue an ARKANSAS Birth Certificate. This will be all he needs to prove his citizenship in the future.
THEN, today ... Isaiah got a Medicaid Number!!! He qualified for AR Kids First Medicaid plan B, which has a small co-pay on all his care, but covers EVERYTHING -- Medical, Dental, you name it! WE ARE DELIGHTED!!! This means that for the most part, his health care is taken care of. We will have to send in updated paperwork each year, but it appears that a large portion of our concerns and worries are now over.
Please continue to pray on behalf of Isaiah and our entire family. We are fully convinced that he has done as well as he has because of the prayers of our friends and loved ones.
Thanks again for all your love, prayers, and support.
Yours,
On Thursday, May 8, we got Isaiah's latest lab results. He is still HIV undetectable and most everything else looks good!!! With his cholesterol going up, the doctors are advising us to change his meds when we return to the States in August. There's been a lot of research done and it looks like a good choice. Please be in prayer about this change. And we sincerely appreciate each and every prayer that has been prayed on his behalf. We know God has shown us His great mercy.
He has a tutor that comes over every day, Monday - Saturday, for an hour or so. She was his teacher at The New Guyana School last year. Since we are here for a shorter time this year, we asked if she could spend time one on one with him. He is doing excellent! And Teacher Helen is the best teacher he could possibly have right now. She is amazing with him. I just enjoy sitting in the next room listening to
the two of them. She is so kind and gentle. I hear her in there so often saying, "Oh Isaiah, I just thank God for you!" And if he struggles with something, she quotes encouraging scriptures to him. She is truly a blessing.
As soon as we get back to the States, we'll be going back to Little Rock to Arkansas Children's Hospital for his check up. I'll let you know how that goes. Thank you for your prayers on his behalf. I truly thank you!
On August 19th Erin and I took Isaiah to Arkansas Children's Hospital for his check up. It turned out to be an all day affair, but was a good day. He's not gained any weight since April (his last check up), but he's grown an inch taller. The doctor checked him and he got his blood drawn as usual. And, as the staff doctors and nurse had told us before, they were ready to change his medicine some. Since 1998 Isaiah has been taking seven doses of medicine a day, plus an antibiotic three times a week. One of his daily medicines was liquid Norvir (Ritonivir). The best way to describe the taste is like gasoline. It is horrible. That is the particular drug that is causing his cholesterol to go up, too. So, that is the one they are discontinuing and replacing with a newer medicine. This will be given in 3 capsules once a day at night. Isaiah is thrilled! PRAYER REQUEST: THAT THIS MEDICINE WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP HIS BLOOD COUNT GOOD AND HIS HIV LEVEL DOWN WITHOUT DANGEROUS SIDE EFFECTS. I'm a little nervous about changing. He has done so well on the drugs he's been taking since 1998 (as far as the HIV level), and once he stops taking the Norvir, he builds a resistance to it and can't take it again. But because of the risk of causing heart problems, it's time to change it. He also can discontinue using the antibiotic three times a week.
After seeing the Infectious Disease doctors, we then saw a surgeon concerning his umbilical hernia. He will have surgery to correct that in October. He said it is a simple surgery, but as you all know, when it involves your child, no surgery is "simple." So pray that God's hand will guide that surgeon and Isaiah will heal quickly. Also, pray that Isaiah will be calm. He's really scared about that right now.
Thank you all for your sincere love and concern for Isaiah. And for your prayers! May God use Isaiah to His glory.
Isaiah went for his check up in Little Rock on September 16th. This is his first exam after changing his medicine. The reason for changing it was because his cholesterol had been going up. Well, his cholesterol did come down since he's been taking the new medicine, but his HIV level is positive again. He has been testing "zero" for a long time, and that was the scary part of changing the medicine. The positive level is as low as can possibly be read. So, we're praying that God will adjust this medicine to Isaiah's body and that he will soon, again, be "zero." Arkansas Children's Hospital will be keeping a close check on this.
Isaiah also had some heart tests done, and all of those came back normal. We praise God for that and are reminded that HE is in control.
Isaiah is scheduled for surgery to repair his herniated belly button on October 6th. I ask that you keep that in your prayers as well, praying that he won't be upset and that the surgery will be uncomplicated.
Steve has enjoyed the game of golf for several years. Recently Isaiah and I have been playing some with Steve. It's really a lot of fun! I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I am. But it's a special time for Steve and Isaiah to go out together. Here are some pictures of Isaiah's day golfing.
Steve met Erin, Isaiah and me in Little Rock for Isaiah's surgery. He had his belly button hernia repaired at Arkansas Children's Hospital on November 4th. He went into the surgery great!!! Not scared ... just a brave little boy. But ... waking up was another story. The nurse warned us he was MAD! And she was right! He wanted to go HOOOOOOOOMMMME! The nurse also said that was very normal for children to wake up from anesthesia mad like that. It took about 30 minutes for him to settle down. But then he rested well and we were able to leave the hospital after a few hours. Our trip home to Springdale was kind of long, but he did pretty good. He's just taking it kind of easy this week, but eager to get back to bouncing around! He also had blood drawn to test his HIV level. We'll hear from that in a couple of weeks.
Just a quick note to let you all know that Isaiah is back down to HIV negative! His level had come up to positive after changing to his new medication ... so this is SUPER GREAT NEWS!!!!!! Thank you all for your continued prayers.
JANUARY 8, 2004 ... ISAIAH TURNED 7 YEARS OLD! What a blessing. We are so thankful for God's mercies.
Isaiah had been wanting a shirt and tie like his Dad, so he got this for his birthday. He is so handsome!
His health continues to do well. He will have another check up in Little Rock in February.
Thank you for your continued prayers. God has brought him a long way and I pray Isaiah will always seek God's will for his life.

Isaiah is having a great summer! He's enjoying the fresh pineapple almost daily. He's spent some time in the pool. He loves mingling with the teams each week ... especially with the teen boys. He's found him some buddies.
He had a little accident a few weeks ago and hurt his foot. He slipped on something in the house and must have hit his foot on a chair or something. We think he broke a toe or couple of bones on the top of his foot. He was pretty immobilized for about 3 days ... then he started finding ways to get around. Now he's pretty much back to normal. It's amazing what goes on in children's minds. He was just sure he had "lost some bones."

Teacher Helen with Isaiah
We took a little staff retreat and spent two nights in the rainforest at the Shanklands Resort. Isaiah had a great time during the day, but at night, the rather LARGE tarantulas come out and we just didn't care too much for them. So, he was saying he was "ready to go back to Guyana." I guess he thought we'd gone so far, we'd just left the country! But, he and I enjoyed a walk into the jungle with a guide. Charlie, the guide, told us all about some of the plants and we looked for monkies, but never got to see one this time.
